D-5 Tool Steel Material Information

D-5 is an air hardening high carbon-high chromium die. The addition of approximately 3% cobalt to D-5 gives this grade extra resistance to galling and pickup in additional to superior hot hardness which is useful for semi-hot work applications. The cobalt addition also is effective in retaining high hardness levels when it is desirable to nitride specialized tools.

Hardening happens between 1800°F - 1850°F.

D-5 is an oversized material,

Flats

+/- .015 upto .040 on thickness

+/- .080 upto .125 on width

 

Rounds

Up to 1" +/- .007 up to .018

1" up to 6" +/- .015 up to .040

6" and up +/- .0625 up to .250

Hardening Temp.:    1800°F - 1850°F

 

Quench Medium:    Air salt bath

 

Tempering Range:    400°F - 1000°F

 

Typical Hardness Level:   58 to 62 R/C

 

Preheat Forging:      1450°F - 1550°F

 

Forging Temp.:    2050°F - 2100°F

  

Anneal Temp.:    1650°F

 

Anneal Cooling Method:    

Furnace cool to 1000°F at 100°F per hour, then air cool.

Anneal Hardness:    262 BHN
